IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common, chronic functional disorder of the large intestine that causes abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, gas, spasms, abdominal cramps, flatulence, distension, and changes in bowel habits and stool consistency (diarrhea, constipation, or both). It does not cause permanent damage or inflammation to the intestine, but it significantly affects quality of life. Irritable bowel syndrome is also known by various names, including nervous colitis, irritable colon, and nervous colon.

This syndrome can occur at any age. It often begins in adolescence or early adulthood. It is twice as common in women as in men.

Approximately 20-25% of people in the United States have symptoms of IBS. This condition is the most common bowel problem that leads to referrals to a gastrointestinal specialist.

The exact causes are unknown, but it is considered multifactorial, involving abnormal intestinal muscle contractions, visceral hypersensitivity, stress, changes in the gut microbiota, and psychological factors.

The gut is connected to the brain by hormonal and nerve signals that travel back and forth between the gut and the brain. These signals affect bowel function and symptoms. The nerves can become more active during times of stress. This can cause the intestines to become more sensitive and to compress or contract more.

The diagnosis is based on symptoms and the exclusion of other diseases through medical examinations such as blood tests or colonoscopy, especially if there are warning signs such as weight loss or bleeding.

Remember that it's important to have a colonoscopy to rule out other conditions that may present symptoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including colon cancer. This procedure is crucial for reaching an accurate diagnosis or ruling out IBS.

At Dr. Ricardo Alcocer Tamayo 's clinic, we specialize in specialized studies for the diagnosis of this condition.

Don’t assume that all your colon and bowel discomfort is due to anxiety, stress, or nerves .”

If you're not convinced that your colon and intestinal problems are due to your emotions, then it's worth investigating further and, ideally, getting a colonoscopy .
