What is a colonoscopy?
It is a procedure performed with a colonoscope (a small, flexible tube with a camera) to directly view the lower part of the digestive tract. It allows observation of the colon, anus, rectum, and part of the small intestine.
It can diagnose and treat diseases that affect these parts of the gastrointestinal system such as: colon ulcers, colitis, inflammation, hemorrhoids, infections, presence of fungi, polyps, cancer, premalignant lesions, diverticula, diagnosis of chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, bleeding sites, causes of intestinal pain, gastrointestinal problems, etc.
It doesn't hurt, it doesn't cause any discomfort or inconvenience; you will be sedated during the procedure and in a deep sleep. It is not general anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure; you do not need to stay in the hospital.
Colonoscopy is the best method for diagnosing colon, anal, and rectal cancer. Biopsies can be taken to diagnose infections, inflammation, cancer, etc.
The additional cost for the biopsy is $800 pesos.
