Pediatric endoscopy is a procedure performed with an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera) to directly view the inside of the upper digestive tract. It helps diagnose and treat symptoms and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine. It is also known as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, panendoscopy, or gastroscopy.
It is used to diagnose different diseases such as gastritis, reflux, heartburn, ulcers, acid reflux, hiatal hernias, polyps, presence of fungi, infections, inflammations, cancer of the stomach, esophagus and intestine, premalignant lesions, etc.
Endoscopy is an outpatient procedure; the patient does not need to be hospitalized or stay in the hospital. It is performed under sedation, which means the patient will be asleep and in a deep sleep. They will not feel any discomfort or pain. It is not general anesthesia.
Biopsies may be taken during the procedure for analysis. The biopsy has an additional cost of $800 pesos.
